Why we bought this piece: This was our first foray into the work of Latvian-born, NY-based artist Edvins Strautmanis. We loved his bold brushwork, which he did with a broom while the canvas was laid on the floor. A contemporary of other action painters like Kazuo Shiraga, Strautmanis never achieved the critical acclaim of his 70's and 80's NY School peers. His works are in the collections of the Latvian National Museum and other prestigious collections.
