Artist Statement: For several years I have been working on a series of large and small scale drawings and paintings inspired by local mixed wood and heathland. All the work derives from drawings that are pushed to abstraction through a reductive painting process. This small painting is part of the ‘Roots Suite’ series which focuses on detailed areas of ground patches and tree roots. I like the combination of loose paint with more considered mark making and in some of the work I often incorporate tightly drawn elements using silverpoint, pencil and most recently, hand embroidery.
